Kendal in Cumbria - A Base In The Lake District
The Lake District is one of the most beautiful parts of England. If you are planning a visit to this magnificent National Park then the best place to base yourself is the town of Kendal in Cumbria. Whatever type of trip you are planning you will find accommodation in the town that suits any kind of budget.
Often described as the southern entrance to the Lake District, the town is situated only ten miles from the world famous Lake Windermere. If you have your own transport then you can also arrange trips to other lakes that are further afield. Lake Windermere has plenty of activities to keep any visitor occupied. You could try your hand at boating on the lake or if you are lucky there may be a special event with water based races and competitions.

Kendal is blessed with a fine location and views that can inspire even the coldest heart.
In the past, the major industry in this part of Cumbria would have been wool. The hills are excellent grazing for flocks of sheep, and the many streams and rivulets flowing down the valley sides allowed water mills to spring up to provide power to the weavers.
Today the industry is in decline though it is still possible to pick up a few homespun items as souvenirs. If you ask a typical Yorkshire-man why Kendal is famous they will immediately tell you 'cake'. The townspeople make a delicious mint cake that must be sampled on any visit.
